Good evening, God bless you and Welcome to Genesis chapter 20.
Asking wisdom, knowledge and understanding from the Father in the name of Jesus Christ, Gen. 20:1.
Gen 20:1
And Abraham85 journeyed5265 from thence4480, 8033 toward the south5045 country,776 and dwelled3427 between996 Kadesh6946 and Shur,7793 and sojourned1481 in Gerar.1642Gen 20:2
And Abraham85 said559 of413 Sarah8283 his wife,802 She1931 is my sister:269 and Abimelech40 king4428 of Gerar1642 sent,7971 and took3947 (853) Sarah.8283Here we have the same old play, it worked once so I guess old Abraham figured "why not??" and tried it one more time.
But God430 came935 to413 Abimelech40 in a dream2472 by night,3915 and said559 to him, Behold,2009 thou art but a dead man,4191 for5921 the woman802 which834 thou hast taken;3947 for she1931 is a man's1167 wife.1166Gen 20:3
That is to say, the wife of a husband or master in the hebrew.
Gen 20:4
But Abimelech40 had not3808 come near7126, 413 her: and he said,559 Lord,136 wilt thou slay2026 also1571 a righteous6662 nation?1471We see that Abimelech knew who it was who spoke to him in this dream. Before you think the custom of the time or just well mannered, this #H136 is emphaticly THE LORD. this is the only meaning for this word. Abimelech knew the Lord when he spoke to him.
Gen 20:5
Said559 he1931 not3808 unto me, She1931 is my sister?269 and she,1931 even1571 she herself1931 said,559 He1931 is my brother:251 in the integrity8537 of my heart3824 and innocency5356 of my hands3709 have I done6213 this.2063It wasn't my falt Lord, they decieved me. Just like they did in Gen.12:13. Lets see what hapens this time.
Gen 20:6
And God430 said559 unto413 him in a dream,2472 Yea,1571 I595 know3045 that3588 thou didst6213 this2063 in the integrity8537 of thy heart;3824 for I595 also1571 withheld2820 thee from sinning4480, 2398 against me: therefore5921, 3651 suffered5414 I thee not3808 to touch5060, 413 her.God himself withheld Abimelech from sinning.
Gen 20:8
Therefore Abimelech40 rose early7925 in the morning,1242 and called7121 all3605 his servants,5650 and told1696 (853) all3605 these428 things1697 in their ears:241 and the men376 were sore afraid.3372, 3966U had better get it in gear my boy, or you are in for a VERY rude awakening.
Gen 20:8
Therefore Abimelech40 rose early7925 in the morning,1242 and called7121 all3605 his servants,5650 and told1696 (853) all3605 these428 things1697 in their ears:241 and the men376 were sore afraid.3372, 3966It is rather humerous, we have a forign nation that knows the Lord. Word spreads I guess.
Gen 20:9
Then Abimelech40 called7121 Abraham,85 and said559 unto him, What4100 hast thou done6213 unto us? and what4100 have I offended2398 thee, that3588 thou hast brought935 on5921 me and on5921 my kingdom4467 a great1419 sin?2401 thou hast done6213 deeds4639 unto5973 me that834 ought not3808 to be done.6213This just wasn't very nice Abraham. You could have gotten me in a world of trouble.
Gen 20:10
And Abimelech40 said559 unto413 Abraham,85 What4100 sawest7200 thou, that3588 thou hast done6213 (853) this2088 thing?1697Just what reason could you have for doing this to me??
Gen 20:11
And Abraham85 said,559 Because3588 I thought,559 Surely7535 the fear3374 of God430 is not369 in this2088 place;4725 and they will slay2026 me for5921 my wife's802 sake.1697Just goes to show, we should never judge anybody or form an oppinion of them whithout knowledge of the persons.
Gen 20:12
And yet1571 indeed546 she is my sister;269 she1931 is the daughter1323 of my father,1 but389 not3808 the daughter1323 of my mother;517 and she became1961 my wife.802So, Abraham did not really lie to him, this was his half sister. Also, I must point out that this word for "became" here is the same hebrew word as "was" in Gen 1:2.
Gen 20:13
And it came to pass,1961 when834 God430 caused me to wander8582 from my father's house,4480, 1004, 1 that I said559 unto her, This2088 is thy kindness2617 which834 thou shalt show6213 unto5973 me; at413 every3605 place4725 whither834, 8033 we shall come,935 say559 of me, He1931 is my brother.251Gen 20:14
And Abimelech40 took3947 sheep,6629 and oxen,1241 and menservants,5650 and womenservants,8198 and gave5414 them unto Abraham,85 and restored7725 him (853) Sarah8283 his wife.802he got even ritcher from this deal.
Gen 20:15
And Abimelech40 said,559 Behold,2009 my land776 is before6440 thee: dwell3427 where it pleaseth2896, 5869 thee.Stay as long as you like, just not in my house.
Gen 20:16
And unto Sarah8283 he said,559 Behold,2009 I have given5414 thy brother251 a thousand505 pieces of silver:3701 behold,2009 he1931 is to thee a covering3682 of the eyes,5869 unto all3605 that834 are with854 thee, and with854 all3605 other: thus she was reproved.3198Referring to Abraham as her "brother", so as not to make it look bad on them, as if he had only purchased a mans sister as a servant for a short time. No dis honor on Abraham and Sarah.
Gen 20:17
So Abraham85 prayed6419 unto413 God:430 and God430 healed7495 (853) Abimelech,40 and his wife,802 and his maidservants;519 and they bore3205 children.The prayers of a ritious man availeth much, and abraham just showed that.
Gen 20:18
For3588 the LORD3068 had fast closed up6113, 6113, 1157 all3605 the wombs7358 of the house1004 of Abimelech,40 because5921, 1697 of Sarah8283 Abraham's85 wife.802And so we see, God will protect us in all our ways. We today must act as Abraham did and we may claim the blessings promised to him by God Almighty. And the reason Abraham was so blessed was that he was obedient to the Lord God alwayse. Today we must remember, that if we want to be blessed as Abraham was, is this.
