Good evening, God bless you and welcome to tonight's study in Genesis chapter 25. Asking wisdom, knowledge and understanding from the Father in the name of Jesus Christ:

Gen 25:1 Then again3254 Abraham85 took3947 a wife,802 and her name8034 was Keturah.6989

This is to be Abraham's third wife, if we count the handmaid of Sarah whom she gave Abraham to wife for the sake of a child when Sarah herself was yet barren.

Gen 25:2 And she bore3205 him (853) Zimran,2175 and Jokshan,3370 and Medan,4091 and Midian,4080 and Ishbak,3435 and Shuah.7744

Now, Median is the father of the tribe from which Moses' father n law came from. I have heard it taught that he was a Kennite, just keep in mind that this was by location only. The blood line came from Abraham by way of Midian.

Gen 25:3 And Jokshan3370 begot3205 (853) Sheba,7614 and Dedan.1719 And the sons1121 of Dedan1719 were1961 Asshurim,805 and Letushim,3912 and Leummim.3817

Gen 25:4 And the sons1121 of Midian;4080 Ephah,5891 and Epher,6081 and Hanoch,2585 and Abida,28 and Eldaah.420 All3605 these428 were the children1121 of Keturah.6989

Now Midian seems to be preparing his sons for a big destiny. Lets look at a couple of the names. First is "Hanoch":

H2585

חנוך

chăno^k

khan-oke'

From H2596; initiated; Chanok, an antediluvian patriarch: - Enoch.

The same word as "Enoch". Lets look at the hebrew word from which this was taken.

H2596

חנך

cha^nak

khaw-nak'

A primitive root; properly to narrow (compare H2614); figuratively to initiate or discipline: - dedicate, train up.

This one according to the name, which many times bears significants, would be to carry on the initiation of discepline as started by Enoch.

Next is "Abida":

H28

אבידע

'ăbi^yda^‛

ab-ee-daw'

From H1 and H3045; father of knowledge (that is knowing); Abida, a son of Abraham by Keturah: - Abida, Abidah.

We have the one who has Initiated discipline again, and a father of knowledge, now look what Midian does with his next son, "Eldaah":

H420

אלדּעה

'elda^‛a^h

el-daw-aw'

From H410 and H3045; God of knowledge; Eldaah, a son of Midian: - Eldaah.

Do you get the fealing that they were training up for a disciplined knowledge of God?? Just food for thought.

Gen 25:5 And Abraham85 gave5414 (853) all3605 that834 he had unto Isaac.3327

And so we see, Abraham still holds a great deal of love for Sarah in that he respects her wish for Isaac to be hier to all that Abraham had.

Gen 25:6 But unto the sons1121 of the concubines,6370 which834 Abraham85 had, Abraham85 gave5414 gifts,4979 and sent them away7971 from4480, 5921 Isaac3327 his son,1121 while he yet5750 lived,2416 eastward,6924 unto413 the east6924 country.776

He did however give gifts to his other children, though sending them away from Isaac who would be his heir and the keeper of the covenant of God.

Gen 25:7 And these428 are the days3117 of the years8141 of Abraham's85 life2416 which834 he lived,2416 a hundred3967 threescore and fifteen7657, (8141), 2568 years.8141

Gen 25:8 Then Abraham85 gave up the ghost,1478 and died4191 in a good2896 old age,7872 an old man,2205 and full7649 of years; and was gathered622 to413 his people.5971

Gen 25:9 And his sons1121 Isaac3327 and Ishmael3458 buried6912 him in413 the cave4631 of Machpelah,4375 in413 the field7704 of Ephron6085 the son1121 of Zohar6714 the Hittite,2850 which834 is before5921, 6440 Mamre;4471

Gen 25:10 The field7704 which834 Abraham85 purchased7069 of4480, 854 the sons1121 of Heth:2845 there8033 was Abraham85 buried,6912 and Sarah8283 his wife.802

And so, Abraham is buried with Sarah his wife.

Gen 25:11 And it came to pass1961 after310 the death4194 of Abraham,85 that God430 blessed1288 his son1121 (853) Isaac;3327 and Isaac3327 dwelt3427 by5973 the well Lahai-roi.883

Remember this well?? This is the same well where God spoke to Hagar Sarah's maid when she had ran away from Sarah. (Gen 16).

Gen 25:12 Now these428 are the generations8435 of Ishmael,3458 Abraham's85 son,1121 whom834 Hagar1904 the Egyptian,4713 Sarah's8283 handmaid,8198 bore3205 unto Abraham:85

Remember, god promised to make a great nation of Ishmael as well.

Gen 25:13 And these428 are the names8034 of the sons1121 of Ishmael,3458 by their names,8034 according to their generations:8435 the firstborn1060 of Ishmael,3458 Nebajoth;5032 and Kedar,6938 and Adbeel,110 and Mibsam,4017

Gen 25:14 And Mishma,4927 and Dumah,1746 and Massa,4854

Gen 25:15 Hadar,2316 and Tema,8485 Jetur,3195 Naphish,5305 and Kedemah:6929

Gen 25:16 These428 are the sons1121 of Ishmael,3458 and these428 are their names,8034 by their towns,2691 and by their castles;2918 twelve8147, 6240 princes5387 according to their nations.523

Gen 25:17 And these428 are the years8141 of the life2416 of Ishmael,3458 a hundred3967 and thirty7970 and seven7651 years:8141 and he gave up the ghost1478 and died;4191 and was gathered622 unto413 his people.5971

Gen 25:18 And they dwelt7931 from Havilah4480, 2341 unto5704 Shur,7793 that834 is before5921, 6440 Egypt,4714 as thou goest935 toward Assyria:804 and he died5307 in5921 the presence6440 of all3605 his brethren.251

Now, go to your world atlas, these sons of Ishmael have pouplated the sadearabian countries.

Gen 25:19 And these428 are the generations8435 of Isaac,3327 Abraham's85 son:1121 Abraham85 begot3205 (853) Isaac:3327

Gen 25:20 And Isaac3327 was1961 forty705 years8141 old1121 when he took3947 (853) Rebekah7259 to wife,802 the daughter1323 of Bethuel1328 the Syrian761 of Padan-aram,4480, 6307 the sister269 to Laban3837 the Syrian.761

Gen 25:21 And Isaac3327 entreated6279 the LORD3068 for5227 his wife,802 because3588 she1931 was barren:6135 and the LORD3068 was entreated6279 of him, and Rebekah7259 his wife802 conceived.2029

The same problem his father had, but God chose to grant Isaac answer while still a fairly young man.

en 25:22 And the children1121 struggled together7533 within7130 her; and she said,559 If518 it be so,3651 why4100 am I595 thus?2088 And she went1980 to inquire1875 of (853) the LORD.3068

Again, when we are confused, we must go to the Lord.

Gen 25:23 And the LORD3068 said559 unto her, Two8147 nations1471 are in thy womb,990 and two8147 manner of people3816 shall be separated6504 from thy bowels;4480, 4578 and the one people3816 shall be stronger553 than the other people;4480, 3816 and the elder7227 shall serve5647 the younger.6810

Gen 25:24 And when her days3117 to be delivered3205 were fulfilled,4390 behold,2009 there were twins8380 in her womb.990

Gen 25:25 And the first7223 came out3318 red,132 all over3605 like an hairy8181 garment;155 and they called7121 his name8034 Esau.6215

Gen 25:26 And after that310, 3651 came3318 his brother251 out, and his hand3027 took hold270 on Esau's6215 heel;6119 and his name8034 was called7121 Jacob:3290 and Isaac3327 was threescore8346 years8141 old1121 when she bore3205 them.

These boys were fighting even from the womb of their mother. And will continue to contend with one another.

Gen 25:27 And the boys5288 grew:1431 and Esau6215 was1961 a cunning3045 hunter,6718 a man376 of the field;7704 and Jacob3290 was a plain8535 man,376 dwelling3427 in tents.168

Now this word "plain" here is:

H8535

תּם

ta^m

tawm

From H8552; complete; usually (morally) pious; specifically gentle, dear: - coupled together, perfect, plain, undefiled, upright.

So, Jacob was an upright man, a good man.

Gen 25:28 And Isaac3327 loved157 (853) Esau,6215 because3588 he did eat6310 of his venison:6718 but Rebekah7259 loved157 (853) Jacob.3290

Gen 25:29 And Jacob3290 sod2102 pottage:5138 and Esau6215 came935 from4480 the field,7704 and he1931 was faint:5889

Gen 25:30 And Esau6215 said559 to413 Jacob,3290 Feed3938 me, I pray thee,4994 with4480 that same2088 red122 pottage; for3588 I595 am faint:5889 therefore5921, 3651 was his name8034 called7121 Edom.123

Ok, here it comes.

Gen 25:31 And Jacob3290 said,559 Sell4376 me this day3117 (853) thy birthright.1062

You dont thind Jacob would take advantage do you??

Gen 25:32 And Esau6215 said,559 Behold,2009 I595 am at the point1980 to die:4191 and what profit4100 shall this2088 birthright1062 do to me?

Gen 25:33 And Jacob3290 said,559 Swear7650 to me this day;3117 and he swore7650 unto him: and he sold4376 (853) his birthright1062 unto Jacob.3290

And it worked.

Gen 25:34 Then Jacob3290 gave5414 Esau6215 bread3899 and pottage5138 of lentils;5742 and he did eat398 and drink,8354 and rose up,6965 and went his way:1980 thus Esau6215 despised959 (853) his birthright.1062

He didn't care a bit about that birthright. As we continue with our studies, we will see that Esau didn't care much for anything that his forefathers stood for. But for tonight, this will end our study, I hope you have enjoyed this chapter, and we would like to invite you back for future studies in this great book of genesis. Good night to you all and God bless you and remember, Study to show thyself approved.
