Welcome to tonight's study.  Tonight's question will be;   Why do we study the way we do??  Why do we take the time to break the word back to the original languages when so many teach that all we need is the King James, just believe on Jesus Christ??  And we will answer that question in tonight's study.  So, asking wisdom, knowledge and understanding from the father in the name of Jesus Christ, we begin.

 1Co 14:1  Follow after1377 charity,26 and1161 desire2206 spiritual4152 gifts, but1161 rather3123 that2443 ye may prophesy.4395

Lets look at this word for "prophesy" for a moment.

G4395

προφητεύω

prophe¯teuo¯

prof-ate-yoo'-o

From G4396; to foretell events, divine, speak under inspiration, exercise the prophetic office: - prophesy.

"speak under inspiration".  Isn't that what we do when we teach the word in knowledge and spirit??

1Co 14:2  For1063 he that speaketh2980 in an unknown tongue1100 speaketh2980 not3756 unto men,444 but235 unto God:2316 for1063 no man3762 understandeth191 him; howbeit1161 in the spirit4151 he speaketh2980 mysteries.3466

Now just to be fair to all ideas on this matter we will look at this word for "tongue"  and it is:

G1100

γλῶσσα

glo¯ssa

gloce'-sah

Of uncertain affinity; the tongue; by implication a language (specifically one naturally unacquired): - tongue.

Now if something is "unaquired" then generally it isn't there as far as man is concerned, or rather to say unlearned.  It was given not learned or acquired.

1Co 14:3  But1161 he that prophesieth4395 speaketh2980 unto men444 to edification,3619 and2532 exhortation,3874 and2532 comfort.3889

What would Paul rather us do??  Prophesy, or teach.

Co 14:4  He that speaketh2980 in an unknown tongue1100 edifieth3618 himself;1438 but1161 he that prophesieth4395 edifieth3618 the church.1577

And it is always better ot edify the church body than one indivuall only.

1Co 14:5  I(1161) would2309 that ye5209 all3956 spake2980 with tongues,1100 but1161 rather3123 that2443 ye prophesied:4395 for1063 greater3187 is he that prophesieth4395 than2228 he that speaketh,2980 with tongues,1100 except1622, 1508 he interpret,1329 that2443 the3588 church1577 may receive2983 edifying.3619

In other words, if you can not edify the church, or the body of Christ you have not preformed all that the father would have you to perform.  And if nobody can understand what you say, you have not spoken to the edifying of the church or body of Christ.

1Co 14:6  (1161) Now,3570 brethren,80 if1437 I come2064 unto4314 you5209 speaking2980 with tongues,1100 what5101 shall I profit5623 you,5209 except3362 I shall speak2980 to you5213 either2228 by1722 revelation,602 or2228 by1722 knowledge,1108 or2228 by1722 prophesying,4394 or2228 by1722 doctrine?1322

And here is our answer to our question.  The word used for knowledge here is:

G1108

γνῶσις

gno¯sis

gno'-sis

From G1097; knowing (the act), that is, (by implication) knowledge: - knowledge, science.

This comes only by an in depth study into the word of God.

G1322

διδαχή

didache¯

did-akh-ay'

From G1321; instruction (the act or the matter): - doctrine, hath been taught.

Again, if we do not study, we can give no instruction in a Given matter.

The word for Prophesying is the same meaning as the first one we checked.  and we must have what to prophesy??  Faith for one thing, an atunement with the holy spirit, which comes as we build our faith, and remember, faith cometh by hearing and hearing by the word of God.  We must study.

1Co 14:7  And even3676 things without life895 giving1325 sound,5456 whether1535 pipe836 or1535 harp,2788 except1437 they give1325 a(3361) distinction1293 in the3588 sounds,5353 how4459 shall it be known1097 what is piped832 or2228 harped?2789

1Co 14:8  For1063, (2532) if1437 the trumpet4536 give1325 an uncertain82 sound,5456 who5101 shall prepare3903 himself to1519 the battle?4171

No matter what you use to make a sound, if that sound doesn't make sense to those who hear it, it means nothing.

1Co 14:9  So3779 likewise2532 ye,5210 except3362 ye utter1325 by1223 the3588 tongue1100 words3056 easy to be understood,2154 how4459 shall it be known1097 what is spoken?2980 for1063 ye shall speak2071, 2980 into1519 the air.109

Speak those things that are easy to be understood or you may as well not be speaking.

1Co 14:10  There are,2076 it may be,1487, 5177 so many5118 kinds1085 of voices5456 in1722 the world,2889 and2532 none3762 of them846 is without signification.880

Lets look at this word used for Voices here.

G5456

φωνή

pho¯ne¯

fo-nay'

Probably akin to G5316 through the idea of disclosure; a tone (articulate, bestial or artificial); by implication an address (for any purpose), saying or language: - noise, sound, voice.

This is to say, Languages.  And none of them are mute or without voice or purpose as we see when we look at the word used for "signification".

G880

ἄφωνος

apho¯nos

af'-o-nos

From G1 (as a negative particle) and G5456; voiceless, that is, mute (by nature or choice); figuratively unmeaning: - dumb, without signification.

1Co 14:11  Therefore3767 if1437 I know1492 not3361 the3588 meaning1411 of the3588 voice,5456 I shall be2071 unto him that speaketh2980 a barbarian,915 and2532 he that speaketh2980 shall be a barbarian915 unto1722 me.1698

again, Pual never ceases to stress the point that if you are not understood all that you say means nothing.

1Co 14:12  Even2532 so3779 ye,5210 forasmuch as1893 ye are2075 zealous2207 of spiritual4151 gifts, seek2212 that2443 ye may excel4052 to4314 the3588 edifying3619 of the3588 church.1577

1Co 14:13  Wherefore1355 let him that speaketh2980 in an unknown tongue1100 pray4336 that2443 he may interpret.1329

That is to say, for the most part, that if you go to Spain, and you speak only English, pray that you may interpret or be interpreted else those who hear you will profit nothing from your words.

1Co 14:14  For1063 if1437 I pray4336 in an unknown tongue,1100 my3450 spirit4151 prayeth,4336 but1161 my3450 understanding3563 is2076 unfruitful.175

This would be that which many refer to as the "Prayer Language".  Is it real??  Pual says it is.  But this should be between you and the father, and not for men.

1Co 14:15  What5101 is2076 it then?3767 I will pray4336 with the3588 spirit,4151 and1161 I will pray4336 with the3588 understanding3563 also:2532 I will sing5567 with the3588 spirit,4151 and1161 I will sing5567 with the3588 understanding3563 also.2532

1Co 14:16  Else1893 when1437 thou shalt bless2127 with the3533 spirit,4151 how4459 shall he that occupieth378 the3588 room5117 of the3588 unlearned2399 say2046 Amen(2818) at1909 thy4674 giving of thanks,2169 seeing1894 he understandeth1492 not3756 what5101 thou sayest?3004

1Co 14:17  For1063 thou4771 verily3303 givest thanks2168 well,2573 but235 the3588 other2087 is not3756 edified.3618

If nobody understands what you say, they wont even know when to say Amen.  They havent gotten a thing out of it.

1Co 14:18  I thank2168 my3450 God,2316 I speak2980 with tongues1100 more3123 than ye5216 all:3956

1Co 14:19  Yet235 in1772 the church1577 I had2309 rather speak2980 five4002 words3056 with1223 my3450 understanding,3563 that2443 by my voice I might teach2727 others243 also,2532 than2228 ten thousand3463 words3056 in1722 an unknown tongue.1100

Now take note, Paul says that he would rather speak five words with "my understanding".  How do you get understanding??  You study constantly.  Show thy self approved.  Our righteousness is as filthy rags before the father, so we get as close as we can get by reading the word he has left to us and trust in grace and the blood of Jesus Christ for our salvation.

1Co 14:20  Brethren,80 be1096 not3361 children3813 in understanding:5424 howbeit235 in malice2549 be ye children,3515 but1161 in understanding5424 be1096 men.5046

Again, we must have understanding.

1Co 14:21  In1722 the3588 law3551 it is written,1125 With1722 men of other tongues2084 and2532 other(1722), 2087 lips5491 will I speak2980 unto this5129 people;2992 and2532 yet for all that3779 will they not3761 hear1522 me,3450 saith3004 the Lord.2962

Now here we have a different Greek word used for tounges.

G2084

ἑτερόγλωσσος

heteroglo¯ssos

het-er-og'-loce-sos

From G2087 and G1100; other tongued, that is, a foreigner: - man of other tongue.

Simple, other languages.  But where was it written in the law??  Were was this taght before Christ came to us??  It was in:

Isa 28:11  For3588 with stammering3934 lips8193 and another312 tongue3956 will he speak1696 to413 this2088 people.5971

Isa 28:12  To413 whom834 he said,559 This2063 is the rest4496 wherewith ye may cause the weary5889 to rest;5117 and this2063 is the refreshing:4774 yet they would14 not3808 hear.8085

dont make anything complicated from this one, the word for "stammering" is simply

H3934

ىٍâ

la^‛e^g

law-ayg'

From H3932; a buffoon; also a foreigner: - mocker, stammering.

and goes on to say that they would not hear.

In fact, we will back up just a little bit here.

Isa 28:1  Woe1945 to the crown5850 of pride,1348 to the drunkards7910 of Ephraim,669 whose glorious6643 beauty8597 is a fading5034 flower,6731 which834 are on5921 the head7218 of the fat8081 valleys1516 of them that are overcome1986 with wine!3196

Isa 28:2  Behold,2009 the Lord136 hath a mighty2389 and strong one,533 which as a tempest2230 of hail1259 and a destroying6986 storm,8178 as a flood2230 of mighty3524 waters4325 overflowing,7857 shall cast down5117 to the earth776 with the hand.3027   It may seem off the subject just a bit for the moment, but lets look at this word for "mighty".

H2389

çو÷

cha^za^q

khaw-zawk'

From H2388; strong (usually in a bad sense, hard, bold, violent): - harder, hottest, + impudent, loud, mighty, sore, stiff [-hearted], strong (-er).

Now storm;

H8178

ùزٍّ

s´a‛ar

sah'-ar

From H8175; a tempest; also a terror: - affrighted, X horribly, X sore, storm. See H8181.

  sound familiar??

Isa 28:3  The crown5850 of pride,1348 the drunkards7910 of Ephraim,669 shall be trodden7429 under feet:7272

Isa 28:4  And the glorious6643 beauty,8597 which834 is on5921 the head7218 of the fat8081 valley,1516 shall be1961 a fading5034 flower,6733 and as the hasty fruit1061 before2962 the summer;7019 which834 when he that looketh7200 upon it seeth,7200 while it is yet5750 in his hand3709 he eateth it up.1104

Isa 28:5  In that1931 day3117 shall the LORD3068 of hosts6635 be1961 for a crown5850 of glory,6643 and for a diadem6843 of beauty,8597 unto the residue7605 of his people,5971

Isa 28:6  And for a spirit7307 of judgment4941 to him that sitteth3427 in5921 judgment,4941 and for strength1369 to them that turn7725 the battle4421 to the gate.8179

Isa 28:7  But they428 also1571 have erred7686 through wine,3196 and through strong drink7941 are out of the way;8582 the priest3548 and the prophet5030 have erred7686 through strong drink,7941 they are swallowed up1104 of4480 wine,3196 they are out of the way8582 through4480 strong drink;7941 they err7686 in vision,7203 they stumble6328 in judgment.6417

Note that both the Priest and the Prophet have erred.  How so?

Isa 28:8  For3588 all3605 tables7979 are full4390 of vomit6892 and filthiness,6675 so that there is no1097 place4725 clean.

Isa 28:9  (853) Whom4310 shall he teach3384 knowledge?1844 and whom4310 shall he make to understand995 doctrine?8052 them that are weaned1580 from the milk,4480, 2461 and drawn6267 from the breasts.4480, 7699

Here we have it.  Who will teach knowledge?  now the word for "doctrine" is a bit different from that in the Greek.  It is:

H8052

ùرîهجٍن

shemu^‛a^h

shem-oo-aw'

Feminine passive participle of H8074; something heard, that is, an announcement: - bruit, doctrine, fame, mentioned, news, report, rumor, tidings.

Who will he make to understand this report, or this rumor??

Isa 28:10  For3588 precept6673 must be upon precept,6673 precept6673 upon precept;6673 line6957 upon line,6957 line6957 upon line;6957 here8033 a little,2191 and there8033 a little:2191

This is how we must teach, line upon line friends.  Now we can pick up back where we came in to this book.

Isa 28:12  To413 whom834 he said,559 This2063 is the rest4496 wherewith ye may cause the weary5889 to rest;5117 and this2063 is the refreshing:4774 yet they would14 not3808 hear.8085

Isa 28:13  But the word1697 of the LORD3068 was1961 unto them precept6673 upon precept,6673 precept6673 upon precept;6673 line6957 upon line,6957 line6957 upon line;6957 here8033 a little,2191 and there8033 a little;2191 that4616 they might go,1980 and fall3782 backward,268 and be broken,7665 and snared,3369 and taken.3920

Isa 28:14  Wherefore3651 hear8085 the word1697 of the LORD,3068 ye scornful3944 men,376 that rule4910 this2088 people5971 which834 is in Jerusalem.3389

Isa 28:15  Because3588 ye have said,559 We have made3772 a covenant1285 with854 death,4194 and with5973 hell7585 are we at6213 agreement;2374 when3588 the overflowing7857 scourge7752 shall pass through,5674 it shall not3808 come935 unto us: for3588 we have made7760 lies3577 our refuge,4268 and under falsehood8267 have we hid ourselves:5641

Oh yes, it will pass through and not come unto us.  Does that sound familliar to anybody??  We must be prepaired to face this flood of lies that is to come on the earth in these, the end times.  In order to do that we must study to show ourselves approved.  Not hide ourselves under falsehood.  We will go deeper into this chapter latter, for now let us return to the wrightings of paul.

1Co 14:22  Wherefore5620 tongues1100 are1526 for1519 a sign,4592 not3756 to them that believe,4100 but235 to them that believe not:571 but1161 prophesying4394 serveth not3756 for them that believe not,571 but235 for them which believe.4100

1Co 14:23  If1437 therefore3767 the3588 whole3650 church1577 be come together4905 into1909 one place,846 and2532 all3956 speak2980 with tongues,1100 and1161 there come in1525 those that are unlearned,2399 or2228 unbelievers,571 will they not3756 say2046 that3754 ye are mad?3105

They will have no idea what you are talking about.  it would breed confussion and not knowledge.

1Co 14:24  But1161 if1437 all3956 prophesy,4395 and1161 there come in1525 one5100 that believeth not,571 or2228 one unlearned,2399 he is convinced1651 of5259 all,3956 he is judged350 of5259 all:3956

and so, if we teach the word of God, line upon line as it is written, then we may convince those who are unlearned.

1Co 14:25  And2532 thus3779 are the3588 secrets2927 of his848 heart2588 made1096 manifest;5318 and2532 so3779 falling down4098 on1909 his face4383 he will worship4352 God,2316 and report518 that3754 God2316 is2076 in1722 you5213 of a truth.3689

  Now this my friends is how we want the new folk to react when they come on our group here or come upon us teaching in a church house or on the street corner.1Co 14:26  How5101 is2076 it then,3767 brethren?80 when3752 ye come together,4905 every one1538 of you5216 hath2192 a psalm,5568 hath2192 a doctrine,1322 hath2192 a tongue,1100 hath2192 a revelation,602 hath2192 an interpretation.2058 Let all things3956 be done1096 unto4314 edifying.3619

This is to say, we should all have the same doctrine and toung that we do not cause confussion.  And that doctrine is the doctrine is that of Jesus christ.

1Co 14:27  If1535 any man5100 speak2980 in an unknown tongue,1100 let it be by2596 two,1417 or2228 at the3588 most4118 by three,5140 and2532 that by303 course;3313 and2532 let one1520 interpret.1329

1Co 14:28  But1161 if1437 there be5600 no3361 interpreter,1328 let him keep silence4601 in1722 the church;1577 and1161 let him speak2980 to himself,1438 and2532 to God.2316

In other words, if you dont know the language of those you would teach, have an interpreter or keep your mouth shut.

1Co 14:29  Let(1161) the prophets4396 speak2980 two1417 or2228 three,5140 and2532 let the3588 other243 judge.1252

Dont get too much going at once friends.

1Co 14:30  (1161) If1437 any thing be revealed601 to another243 that sitteth by,2521 let the3588 first4413 hold his peace.4601

1Co 14:31  For1063 ye may1410 all3956 prophesy4395 one by one,2596, 1520 that2443 all3956 may learn,3129 and2532 all3956 may be comforted.3870

1Co 14:32  And2532 the spirits4151 of the prophets4396 are subject5293 to the prophets.4396

1Co 14:33  For1063 God2316 is2076 not3756 the author of confusion,181 but235 of peace,1515 as5613 in1722 all3956 churches1577 of the3588 saints.40

God is not the author of confusion, man is the author of confusion.

1Co 14:34  Let your5216 women1135 keep silence4601 in1722 the3588 churches:1577 for1063 it is not3756 permitted2010 unto them846 to speak;2980 but235 they are commanded to be under obedience,5293 as2531 also2532 saith3004 the3588 law.3551

1Co 14:35  And1161 if1487 they will2309 learn3129 any thing,5100 let them ask1905 their2398 husbands435 at1722 home:3624 for1063 it is2076 a shame149 for women1135 to speak2980 in1722 the church.1577

Here we must understand the customs of the times.  A woman first off, was not to have any part of the church business.  They were not to be in a place of authority over a man spiritually or otherwise.  However, It is a shameful thing for ANYBODY to speak out of turn in church or any other place of worship be they man or woman.

1Co 14:36  What?2228 came1831 the3588 word3056 of God2316 out from575 you?5216 or2228 came2658 it unto1519 you5209 only?3441

1Co 14:37  If any man1536 think himself1380 to be1511 a prophet,4396 or2228 spiritual,4152 let him acknowledge1921 that3754 the things that3739 I write1125 unto you5213 are1526 the commandments1785 of the3588 Lord.2962

1Co 14:38  But1161 if1487 any man5100 be ignorant,50 let him be ignorant.50

If anybody does not recognize that the words of Jesus and the apostles are the commandments of the Lord they are not of God.  And if one will try to convince you different, dont wast much of your time to teach them different where they do not want to learn.  This would be like casting your pearls before swine.

1Co 14:39  Wherefore,5620 brethren,80 covet2206 to prophesy,4395 and2532 forbid2967 not3361 to speak2980 with tongues.1100

1Co 14:40  Let all things3956 be done1096 decently2156 and2532 in2596 order.5010

And in closing, I also will say, forbid not any gift of the spirit, but keep order in our proceedings as God is the author of order, not confusion.

God bless you all,  come back tomorrow night for another chapter in the word of God.
