Welcome to tonight's study in Genesis chapter eleven. As always, asking wisdom, knowledge and understanding from the father, in the name of Jesus Christ,Gen.11:1

Gen 11:1 And the whole³⁶⁰⁵ earth⁷⁷⁶ was¹⁹⁶¹ of one²⁵⁹ language,⁸¹⁹³ and of one²⁵⁹ speech.¹⁶⁹⁷

The word used for "speech" here is:

They were all of the same word or cause. They were all up to the same business.

Gen 11:2 And it came to pass,¹⁹⁶¹ as they journeyed⁵²⁶⁵ from the east,^4480,
6924 that they found⁴⁶⁷² a plain¹²³⁷ in the land⁷⁷⁶ of Shinar;⁸¹⁵² and they dwelt³⁴²⁷ there.⁸⁰³³

Remember the beginning of Nimrods kingdom?? Lets read it again.

Gen 10:10 And the beginning⁷²²⁵ of his kingdom⁴⁴⁶⁷ was¹⁹⁶¹ Babel,⁸⁹⁴ and Erech,⁷⁵¹ and Accad,³⁹⁰ and Calneh,³⁶⁴¹ in the land⁷⁷⁶ of Shinar.⁸¹⁵²

Gen 11:2 And it came to pass,¹⁹⁶¹ as they journeyed⁵²⁶⁵ from the east,^4480,
6924 that they found⁴⁶⁷² a plain¹²³⁷ in the land⁷⁷⁶ of Shinar;⁸¹⁵² and they dwelt³⁴²⁷ there.⁸⁰³³

Gen 11:3 And they said⁵⁵⁹ one³⁷⁶ to⁴¹³ another,⁷⁴⁵³ Go to,³⁰⁵¹ let us make³⁸³⁵ brick,³⁸⁴³ and burn⁸³¹³ them throughly.⁸³¹⁶ And they had¹⁹⁶¹ brick³⁸⁴³ for stone,⁶⁸ and slime²⁵⁶⁴ had¹⁹⁶¹ they for mortar.²⁵⁶³

Gen 11:4 And they said,⁵⁵⁹ Go to,³⁰⁵¹ let us build¹¹²⁹ us a city⁵⁸⁹² and a tower,⁴⁰²⁶ whose top⁷²¹⁸ may reach unto heaven;⁸⁰⁶⁴ and let us make⁶²¹³ us a name,⁸⁰³⁴ lest⁶⁴³⁵ we be scattered abroad⁶³²⁷ upon⁵⁹²¹ the face⁶⁴⁴⁰ of the whole³⁶⁰⁵ earth.⁷⁷⁶

Now this word for name goes a bit deeper than just a name.

A primitive word (perhaps rather from H7760 through the idea of definite and conspicuous position; compare H8064); an appellation, as a mark or memorial of individuality; by implication honor, authority, character: - + base, [in-] fame [-ous], name (-d), renown, report.

They wanted to secure their own position. To attain their own honor and authority. And the implications of reaching to heaven; Isn't that just like man in general, to want to device our own way out and our own position. It still goes on today in the Rapture doctrine. Many people simply must have a way out other than that that is given by scripture. The only way is that of Jesus Christ and we still have many who would try to find other ways to secure and understand our position in the universe. But enough on that. We can also see that they knew of the possibility of separation.

Gen 11:5 And the LORD³⁰⁶⁸ came down³³⁸¹ to see⁷²⁰⁰ ⁽⁸⁵³⁾ the city⁵⁸⁹² and the tower,⁴⁰²⁶ which⁸³⁴ the children¹¹²¹ of men¹²⁰ built.¹¹²⁹

Gen 11:6 And the LORD³⁰⁶⁸ said,⁵⁵⁹ Behold,²⁰⁰⁵ the people⁵⁹⁷¹ is one,²⁵⁹ and they have all³⁶⁰⁵ one²⁵⁹ language;⁸¹⁹³ and this²⁰⁸⁸ they begin²⁴⁹⁰ to do:⁶²¹³ and now⁶²⁵⁸ nothing^3808,
3605 will be restrained¹²¹⁹ from⁴⁴⁸⁰ them, which⁸³⁴ they have imagined²¹⁶¹ to do.⁶²¹³

Here is the word used for "imagined"

A primitive root; to plan, usually in a bad sense: - consider, devise, imagine, plot, purpose, think (evil).

God knew that they were up to no good.

Gen 11:7 Go to,³⁰⁵¹ let us go down,³³⁸¹ and there⁸⁰³³ confound¹¹⁰¹ their language,⁸¹⁹³ that⁸³⁴ they may not³⁸⁰⁸ understand⁸⁰⁸⁵ one³⁷⁶ another's⁷⁴⁵³ speech.⁸¹⁹³

Gen 11:8 So the LORD³⁰⁶⁸ scattered them abroad^{6327, (853)} from thence^4480,
8033 upon⁵⁹²¹ the face⁶⁴⁴⁰ of all³⁶⁰⁵ the earth:⁷⁷⁶ and they left off²³⁰⁸ to build¹¹²⁹ the city.⁵⁸⁹²

Gen 11:9 Therefore^{5921, 3651} is the name⁸⁰³⁴ of it called⁷¹²¹ Babel;⁸⁹⁴ because³⁵⁸⁸ the LORD³⁰⁶⁸ did there⁸⁰³³ confound¹¹⁰¹ the language⁸¹⁹³ of all³⁶⁰⁵ the earth:⁷⁷⁶ and from thence^{4480, 8033} did the LORD³⁰⁶⁸ scatter them abroad⁶³²⁷ upon⁵⁹²¹ the face⁶⁴⁴⁰ of all³⁶⁰⁵ the earth.⁷⁷⁶

And so the languages of mankind had been confused. We have seven continents on this planet, and seven basic languages. Interesting.

Gen 11:10 These⁴²⁸ are the generations⁸⁴³⁵ of Shem:⁸⁰³⁵ Shem⁸⁰³⁵ was a hundred³⁹⁶⁷ years⁸¹⁴¹ old,¹¹²¹ and begot³²⁰⁵ ⁽⁸⁵³⁾ Arphaxad⁷⁷⁵ two years⁸¹⁴¹ after³¹⁰ the flood:³⁹⁹⁹

Gen 11:11 And Shem⁸⁰³⁵ lived²⁴²¹ after³¹⁰ he begot³²⁰⁵ ⁽⁸⁵³⁾ Arphaxad⁷⁷⁵ five²⁵⁶⁸ hundred³⁹⁶⁷ years,⁸¹⁴¹ and begot³²⁰⁵ sons¹¹²¹ and daughters.¹³²³

Gen 11:12 And Arphaxad⁷⁷⁵ lived²⁴²⁵ five²⁵⁶⁸ and thirty⁷⁹⁷⁰ years,⁸¹⁴¹ and begot³²⁰⁵ ⁽⁸⁵³⁾ Salah:⁷⁹⁷⁴

Gen 11:13 And Arphaxad⁷⁷⁵ lived²⁴²¹ after³¹⁰ he begot³²⁰⁵ ⁽⁸⁵³⁾ Salah⁷⁹⁷⁴ four⁷⁰² hundred³⁹⁶⁷ and three⁷⁹⁶⁹ years,⁸¹⁴¹ and begot³²⁰⁵ sons¹¹²¹ and daughters.¹³²³

Gen 11:14 And Salah⁷⁹⁷⁴ lived²⁴²⁵ thirty⁷⁹⁷⁰ years,⁸¹⁴¹ and begot³²⁰⁵ ⁽⁸⁵³⁾ Eber:⁵⁶⁷⁷

Gen 11:15 And Salah⁷⁹⁷⁴ lived²⁴²¹ after³¹⁰ he begot³²⁰⁵ ⁽⁸⁵³⁾ Eber⁵⁶⁷⁷ four⁷⁰² hundred³⁹⁶⁷ and three⁷⁹⁶⁹ years,⁸¹⁴¹ and begot³²⁰⁵ sons¹¹²¹ and daughters.¹³²³

Gen 11:16 And Eber⁵⁶⁷⁷ lived²⁴²¹ four⁷⁰² and thirty⁷⁹⁷⁰ years,⁸¹⁴¹ and begot³²⁰⁵ ⁽⁸⁵³⁾ Peleg:⁶³⁸⁹

Again, Peleg meaning Earthquake. However, this was not when the plates separated.

Gen 11:17 And Eber⁵⁶⁷⁷ lived²⁴²¹ after³¹⁰ he begot³²⁰⁵ ⁽⁸⁵³⁾ Peleg⁶³⁸⁹ four⁷⁰² hundred³⁹⁶⁷ and thirty⁷⁹⁷⁰ years,⁸¹⁴¹ and begot³²⁰⁵ sons¹¹²¹ and daughters.¹³²³

Gen 11:18 And Peleg⁶³⁸⁹ lived²⁴²¹ thirty⁷⁹⁷⁰ years,⁸¹⁴¹ and begot³²⁰⁵ ⁽⁸⁵³⁾ Reu:⁷⁴⁶⁶

Gen 11:19 And Peleg⁶³⁸⁹ lived²⁴²¹ after³¹⁰ he begot³²⁰⁵ ⁽⁸⁵³⁾ Reu⁷⁴⁶⁶ two hundred³⁹⁶⁷ and nine⁸⁶⁷² years,⁸¹⁴¹ and begot³²⁰⁵ sons¹¹²¹ and daughters.¹³²³

Gen 11:20 And Reu⁷⁴⁶⁶ lived²⁴²¹ two⁸¹⁴⁷ and thirty⁷⁹⁷⁰ years,⁸¹⁴¹ and begot³²⁰⁵ ⁽⁸⁵³⁾ Serug:⁸²⁸⁶

Gen 11:21 And Reu⁷⁴⁶⁶ lived²⁴²¹ after³¹⁰ he begot³²⁰⁵ ⁽⁸⁵³⁾ Serug⁸²⁸⁶ two hundred³⁹⁶⁷ and seven⁷⁶⁵¹ years,⁸¹⁴¹ and begot³²⁰⁵ sons¹¹²¹ and daughters.¹³²³

Gen 11:22 And Serug⁸²⁸⁶ lived²⁴²¹ thirty⁷⁹⁷⁰ years,⁸¹⁴¹ and begot³²⁰⁵ ⁽⁸⁵³⁾ Nahor:⁵¹⁵²

Gen 11:23 And Serug⁸²⁸⁶ lived²⁴²¹ after³¹⁰ he begot³²⁰⁵ ⁽⁸⁵³⁾ Nahor⁵¹⁵² two hundred³⁹⁶⁷ years,⁸¹⁴¹ and begot³²⁰⁵ sons¹¹²¹ and daughters.¹³²³

Nahor means "snorer". This is Abram's grandfather. That is to say "Abraham's" grandfather.

Gen 11:24 And Nahor⁵¹⁵² lived²⁴²¹ nine⁸⁶⁷² and twenty⁶²⁴² years,⁸¹⁴¹ and begot³²⁰⁵ ⁽⁸⁵³⁾ Terah:⁸⁶⁴⁶

Gen 11:25 And Nahor⁵¹⁵² lived²⁴²¹ after³¹⁰ he begot³²⁰⁵ ⁽⁸⁵³⁾ Terah⁸⁶⁴⁶ a hundred³⁹⁶⁷ and nineteen^8672,
6240 years,⁸¹⁴¹ and begot³²⁰⁵ sons¹¹²¹ and daughters.¹³²³

Gen 11:26 And Terah⁸⁶⁴⁶ lived²⁴²¹ seventy⁷⁶⁵⁷ years,⁸¹⁴¹ and begot³²⁰⁵ ⁽⁸⁵³⁾ Abram,⁸⁷ ⁽⁸⁵³⁾ Nahor,⁵¹⁵² and Haran.²⁰³⁹

"Abram" is in the Hebrew;

This is preceded by the word:

Apparently contracted from H226 in the demonstrative sense of entity; properly self (but generally used to point out more definitely the object of a verb or preposition, even or namely): - (As such unrepresented in English.)

So, we have here, "The high father".

This would later in Gen.17:5 be changed to:

Contracted from H1 and an unused root (probably meaning to be populous); father of a multitude; Abraham, the later name of Abram: - Abraham.

So he world be changed from the exalted father to the father of a multitude. or "father of many nations"

Gen 11:27 Now these⁴²⁸ are the generations⁸⁴³⁵ of Terah:⁸⁶⁴⁶ Terah⁸⁶⁴⁶ begot³²⁰⁵ ⁽⁸⁵³⁾ Abram,⁸⁷ ⁽⁸⁵³⁾ Nahor,⁵¹⁵² and Haran;²⁰³⁹ and Haran²⁰³⁹ begot³²⁰⁵ ⁽⁸⁵³⁾ Lot.³⁸⁷⁶

Gen 11:28 And Haran²⁰³⁹ died⁴¹⁹¹ before^{5921, 6440} his father¹ Terah⁸⁶⁴⁶ in the land⁷⁷⁶ of his nativity,⁴¹³⁸ in Ur²¹⁸ of the Chaldees.³⁷⁷⁸

Gen 11:29 And Abram⁸⁷ and Nahor⁵¹⁵² took³⁹⁴⁷ them wives:⁸⁰² the name⁸⁰³⁴ of Abram's⁸⁷ wife⁸⁰² was Sarai;⁸²⁹⁷ and the name⁸⁰³⁴ of Nahor's⁵¹⁵² wife,⁸⁰² Milcah,⁴⁴³⁵ the daughter¹³²³ of Haran,²⁰³⁹ the father¹ of Milcah,⁴⁴³⁵ and the father¹ of Iscah.³²⁵²

Gen 11:30 But Sarai⁸²⁹⁷ was¹⁹⁶¹ barren;⁶¹³⁵ she had no³⁶⁹ child.²⁰⁵⁶

And she is to remain barren until Abraham is 90 years old in Gen.17.

Gen 11:31 And Terah⁸⁶⁴⁶ took³⁹⁴⁷ ⁽⁸⁵³⁾ Abram⁸⁷ his son,¹¹²¹ and Lot³⁸⁷⁶ the son¹¹²¹ of Haran²⁰³⁹ his son's¹¹²¹ son,¹¹²¹ and Sarai⁸²⁹⁷ his daughter-in-law,³⁶¹⁸ his son¹¹²¹ Abram's⁸⁷ wife;⁸⁰² and they went forth³³¹⁸ with⁸⁵⁴ them from Ur^4480,
218 of the Chaldees,³⁷⁷⁸ to go¹⁹⁸⁰ into the land⁷⁷⁶ of Canaan;³⁶⁶⁷ and they came⁹³⁵ unto⁵⁷⁰⁴ Haran,²⁷⁷¹ and dwelt³⁴²⁷ there.⁸⁰³³

And so we now have the entry into the land of Canaan and this my friends is where things get REALLY interesting.

Gen 11:32 And the days³¹¹⁷ of Terah⁸⁶⁴⁶ were¹⁹⁶¹ two hundred³⁹⁶⁷ and five²⁵⁶⁸ years:⁸¹⁴¹ and Terah⁸⁶⁴⁶ died⁴¹⁹¹ in Haran.²⁷⁷¹

And that ends this chapter. Next we will begin chapter twelve and Abrams very long journey to the promised land, and the beginning of this Great nation God promised to make of him. The MANY nations if you will.

A funny thing about these journeys, many times the end is much the same as the beginning.
